Stefan Katz
Data Science Researcher

I have more than 7 years of experience in System Dynamics modeling. Recently I have moved towards integrating System Dynamics with Machine Learning and Data Science to explore new methods and challenge the most complex and dynamic problems we face in today’s society. I approach my work with an entrepreneurial attitude, always questioning the status quo and searching for sustainable solutions in my research and my consulting work. I am fluent in System Dynamics modeling, Python, data analysis and business strategy to make sure that the relevant data is available to make sustainable business decisions.

Work in Progress

  • Developing a toolbox for automated SD model validation

    Project Page

Different descriptions of validation tests of System Dynamics models are available in specialized literature, but few attempts have been made to operationalize them. The aim of this project is to standardize validation tests and implement them in an automated testing sequence. This testing sequence, called PySD testing battery, provides modelers and reviewers with relevant insights about model behavior. The validation tests included are continously developed and refined. Automating the tests allows to decrease the time used for validation at the same time increasing its rigor. This is helpful for producing models with higher confidence and quality. The testing battery provides interpretation aid to the modeler to ensure that the output of such testing remains easily understandable.

  • Topology of protest movements

By comparing the patterns of social media-facilitated organizations of protest movements (namely, Hong Kong, Catalonia, Venezuela and Iran), the objective is to identify different strategies that are applied to coordinate, mobilize others, and adapt to the changes in the surrounding environment.

  • Dynamic community detection in social networks

Dynamic community detection in networks is done mostly through dividing a network into several static snapshots, which leads to misattribution of the strength of ties and misrepresentation of communities overtime. This limitation is addressed by introducing a dynamic view on edge construction and edge maintenance.

  • System Dynamics learners for stock price prediction

Using System Dynamics learners, a neural network can be boosted to provide more accurate predictions on future price movements and capitalize on the inherent dynamics within the financial system.
